How to launch an eCommerce campaign using HilltopAds?

The instructions below are intended for advertisers who already have eCommerce offers and want to test or scale them using HilltopAds traffic.

Please note: the settings described below are for guidance purposes only and are based on our team’s practical experience and internal testing. In performance marketing, there is no single universal approach that works equally well for all offers, GEOs, and traffic sources. We do not guarantee that these settings will instantly generate high volumes of conversions or revenue. Achieving stable results requires continuous testing, data analysis, and ongoing campaign optimization based on the specific offer and traffic conditions.

Recommended Campaign Setup Overview:

  1. Top format: Popunder (mobile)

  2. Pricing models: CPM, CPC, CPA Goal*, CPA* (available if you use postback)

  3. Traffic: All traffic

  4. Frequency cap: 1/24 (balanced approach) or 1/6 (more aggressive retargeting)

  5. Daily budget:
    $300–500 per GEO (recommended)
    minimum $200 per GEO for testing

  6. Auto-optimization: essential

  7. Conversion delay: must be considered before optimization

Creating campaign

Go to your HilltopAds dashboard, click on Manage Campaigns tab on the left and click the Add Campaign button.

Select Ad format

Popunder mobile (recommended and most stable)

Model types: CPM or CPA Goal (available when conversions are tracked)

Traffic channels: all traffic channels

Frequency cap

  • 1/24 (balanced approach)

  • 1/6 (more aggressive retargeting)

Technical Targeting

  1. Device type: Mobile / Smartphones only

  2. OS & OS versions: iOS 16+; Android 11+

  3. Use language targeting only if your landing page does not automatically adapt to the user's language.

Automatic Optimization Rules (Required)

eCommerce campaigns require a distinct optimization approach as conversions often occur with a delay.

Key principle:

You must know your average time to conversion. Without this, optimization decisions will be inaccurate.

Recommended Setup:

It's recommended optimizing based on eCPA. Always set a Max CPM when you’re running CPA Goal campaigns.

Do not rush optimization. Wait until you have:

  • collected sufficient data

  • allowed the conversion window to pass

This allows you to scale high-performing zones faster and automatically cut underperforming traffic.

Budget Recommendations

  • Recommended: $300–500 per GEO per day

  • Minimum: $200 per GEO

Lower budgets may lead to insufficient data and unreliable results.

  • Do not set a campaign schedule (run continuously)

  • Split campaigns by:

    • Traffic type (proxy / non-proxy)
