Where Can You Show Ads?
There are several ways you can monetize your extension, depending on how it works and what your users need.
Add a banner to your extension popup
If your extension has a popup, you can reserve a small space for a banner ad (300x250). This way, users see the ad each time they open the popup.
Keep the ad separate from your extension’s controls so it does not get in the way. Even a small banner can help you earn more from your current users.
Use a DirectLink
You can also use HilltopAds Direct Link, which lets you monetize without needing to add a banner. You can connect this link to a user action or add it as a clearly marked sponsored link inside your extension.
This approach is helpful if your extension’s interface does not have enough space for a traditional ad.
Monetize related web pages
You can also add monetization to pages connected to your extension, such as:
a welcome or onboarding page;
a user dashboard;
an account or settings page;
a documentation or help section;
the extension’s official website.
If you manage these pages, you can add HilltopAds ad codes just like you would on any website, as long as you follow the relevant policies.
What About Chrome Web Store Policies?
Google does allow ads in Chrome extensions, but they must follow Chrome Web Store policies. Ads should fit the context of your extension, be clearly labeled, and never look like system notifications or get in the way of how your extension works.
Make sure your extension also meets Chrome’s privacy, data use, and Manifest V3 requirements when adding ads.
The main goal is to make sure monetization supports your extension and does not take away from the user experience.
If you're unsure which format or implementation is suitable for your extension, contact the HilltopAds team and tell us how your extension works. We'll help you find an appropriate monetization setup.
